Today, we went to the New Jersey State Fair. By coincidence, it was going on about 15 miles from our campground, so we figured "What the heck!" The fair was quite a pleasant surprise. It was much less commercialized (other than the midway) than I was expecting. We were glad to see that 4-H was a main component of the fair, and we saw all kinds of 4-H projects, booths, and animal showings. Quite a flashback to Roger and my farming childhoods!
I especially liked the quilt show where we saw some absolutely amazing quilts. Also, the farm animals were charming (note the pigs!). We were rather surprised to see some "zoo" animals, such as an elephant, a couple camels, and some monkeys. The elephant and one of the camels were set up for rides, but the rides were in total sun, so we did not ride. We ate a lot of junk food at the fair, of course. But, we didn't stuff ourselves, so on the way home, we stopped at a little Italian place in the nearby town and had a "family size" calzone, which turned out to be enough for a family two or three times bigger than ours. It was delicious, and I'm sure the leftovers will also be delicious.
